what has being gay got to do with his being nasty? The two aren't related unless the nastiness is specifically aimed at you coz you are straight(?). So you should deal with him like any other nasty colleague, confront him about the things he's saying and ask for an explanation. Best to go with a neutral colleague for witness. When he is talking ill of someone again, just say politely that you dont wish to talk to him, while he is talking like that. If he takes the mick just walk away. People like that (nasty NOT gay) arent worth bothering with.
What does him being gay have to do with it? An a**hole is an a**hole, whatever their sexual preference. Your statement leads me to believe that you are more than an ';innocent victim';.
i'd pull him out for a second and ask him if he has a problem then i'd tell him that i would appreciate it if he told it to me instead of other people.
If someone tells you he's said something nasty about you, just shake your head and say he just can't accept that you're not interested and laugh about how bitchy some gays can be.
I would speak to him directly, ask him why he's talking about you behind your back, and why? Let him know you would like to be friends.

be polite and tell him its not appropiate to be like that or just tell the boss unlesss he is the boss
don't beat him or you will be accused of queer bashing ,just call him to one side and tell him politely to quit or you will sue him for slander ,if this doesn't work then thump him
